What is Paving Primer?

Paving primer is a bonding slurry that is applied to the underside of paving slabs before they are laid onto a bedding mortar. It is an essential part of modern paving installations and is particularly important when laying porcelain paving, which has a very low absorption rate and will not naturally bond to mortar beds. Paving primers create a strong mechanical bond between the paving slab and the bedding mortar, helping to ensure a long-lasting installation.

Why is Paving Primer Important?

Without a paving primer, there is a significantly increased risk of paving slabs becoming loose over time. As paving is subjected to foot traffic, weather conditions and seasonal ground movement, a poor bond between the slab and bedding mortar can result in rocking, movement and ultimately paving failure. Applying primer to the underside of each slab helps maximise adhesion and ensures the paving becomes securely fixed to the mortar bed below.
