* This calculator is intended as a rough guide. Actual quantities may vary depending on paving pattern and site conditions.
* Slab and area calculations do not account for joint width. We recommend a minimum 3mm joint for porcelain paving and 5mm for natural stone. Wider joints will reduce the number of slabs needed — for complex patterns or larger joints, adjust your quantity accordingly.

How do I calculate how much paving I need?
Measure the length and width of your patio area in metres and multiply them together to get the area in m². Then add 10% for wastage. For example, a 5m × 4m patio is 20m², so you should order at least 22m² of paving. Use the calculator above to do this automatically.
What is wastage and why do I need to account for it?
Wastage refers to material lost when cutting slabs to fit edges, obstacles and corners, plus any slabs that crack during cutting or installation. For a straightforward rectangular patio 5–10% is usually enough. For complex shapes, curved edges or diagonal patterns, budget for 15% to be safe. It is always better to order slightly more than you need. For porcelain paving in particular, we strongly recommend ordering everything in one go — colour can vary between production batches, so having a few spares from the same batch is far easier than trying to match later. If you do need to re-order, quote your batch number and we will do our best to match it.
How do I measure an irregular shaped patio?
For L-shaped areas, split the space into two rectangles, calculate each separately using the calculator, then add the two totals together. For curved or circular areas, use the maximum width as both dimensions to get a safe overestimate, or use the formula π × radius² for a circle. Increase your wastage allowance to 15% for any irregular or curved shape.
How do I find out how much area each pack covers?
Each product page shows coverage per pack and per slab. Our paving calculator on the product page will automatically work out the number of crates and individual slabs you need once you enter your patio dimensions or area. Simply browse to a product, enter your area in the "By Patio Size" tab and the quantities are calculated for you.
Do I need a sub-base when laying paving slabs?
Yes - a solid sub-base is essential for a long-lasting patio. For most domestic patios, a 100mm layer of compacted MOT Type 1 (hardcore) topped with a 50mm bed of sharp sand or mortar is the standard approach. Without a good sub-base, slabs can sink, rock and crack over time. Always allow for these layers in your project planning.
